My Journey Through Cancer

These poems are the journey I had over the years, they just came into my head at any time of the day or night. They came absolutely verbatim so I had to write them down there and then otherwise they were lost, consequently I had pads and pencils all over the house lest I forgot any.

Who Am I

Hi I’m Felicity Trundle born and raised in Surrey, England. On completing my education I started my working life in magistrate’s courts as a court clerk. After leaving to start a family I resumed my career in various customer service positions in the retail trade and then moved into practice management at General Practice Doctors surgeries where eventually I became a Practice Manager at a surgery in West Sussex. In 1996 I moved to the Fylde Coast in Lancashire where I held several production and planning positions in national and local companies.

My Cancer

In 2011 I was diagnosed with cancer (clear cell carcinoma) at between stage 3 and 4. Most significantly this type of cancer usually associated with the renal system was in my breast, effectively ‘rebranding’ my diagnosis from rare to extremely rare. The prognosis was not good I felt that my world had ended. Treatment commenced almost immediately with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, along the way I suffered an extravasation injury resulting in sepsis. I am forever indebted to my oncologist for his constant attention and support during what I can only describe as the worst days of my life.

Writing Poems

I did not set out to write poetry, indeed poems as such have never been top of my reading agenda. These poems are the journey I had over the years, they just came into my head at any time of the day or night. They came absolutely verbatim so I had to write them down there and then otherwise they were lost, consequently I had pads and pencils all over the house lest I forgot any. The poems increased and although it never occurred to me at the outset I was encouraged to get them published.

My Website

Having created a book of poems my next ‘challenge’ was how to get them out into the big wide world, having explored various options I quickly realised that the web offered the best platform to publish my book utilising modern technology.

In The Beginning

It started with a fall against a door, my breast was badly bruised which did not heal. Deep down I just knew that something was not right, there then followed the usual round of visit to the GP eventually leading to the breast clinic at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. I had a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsies. The breast care nurse informed me that my scan was reported as bizarre. I knew then ‘My Journey’ had started.

Prognosis

I remember being in the consultants room with my husband and a support nurse. The surgeon confirmed that I had a very rare cancer (clear cell carcinoma) at between stage 3 and 4, the prognosis was poor and they needed to move quickly. I was totally numb feeling very much like a robot. Knowing what needed to be done but unable to comprehend the diagnosis or prognosis. Likened very much to the light at the end of the tunnel, only the light had gone out.

Cancer Care

Cancer treatments are specifically tuned to the patient’s requirements. Significantly in my case was the added element of treating a very rare cancer at stage 3 to 4. My oncologist placed me on an intensive course of chemo and radio therapy. I was fortunate to have wonderful medical support from beginning to end. It has been difficult since 2011 coping with the prognosis of ‘Crossed fingers in the air’ but time is a great healer.
